National Instruments NI-9871E RS-485/RS-422 Serial Module

The NI 9871E (Part Number: 198851A-02L) is a 4-Port Serial Module; each port is separated from the other modules in the system. Every port is compatible with the ANSI/EIA/TIA-485 standard. This module also has four RJ-50 receptacles, which offer links for four RS-485/RS-422 instruments. The user must link an external power supply to the Serial Module. The power supply delivers the power for the RS-485/RS-422 transceivers on the NI-9871E Serial Module. The user can utilize a female four-position pigtail to link to an external voltage base. The four connections on the NI 9871E are named 1) VSUP, 2) VSUP, 3) COM, and 4) COM. The locations of these connections and figures illustrating how to make connections can be found in the user module. It is important for the user to remember that all connections must be completed prior to applying power.

The National Instruments NI-9871E RS-485/RS-422 Serial Module supports a low-power sleep mode. However, support for the sleep mode at the system level is based on the chassis the NI 9871E is inserted into. Normally, when a system is in sleep mode, it is not possible to communicate with the modules. During sleep mode, the system consumes the least amount of power possible and may disperse a smaller amount of heat than in the normal mode of operation. The power consumption is 0.5 W maximum in active mode and 50 μW maximum in sleep mode. In addition, the thermal dissipation at 70 degrees C is 1.5 W maximum in active mode and 55 mW maximum in sleep mode.

NI-9871E Obsolete Status has been announced by National Instruments, but will still be available for purchase and repairs by Apex Waves.
