National Instruments sbRIO-9870 C Series Serial Interface Module

The National Instruments sbRIO‑9870 is a C Series Serial Interface Module used to enhance the RS232 serial ports of NI CompactRIO systems for communication with serial devices. The NI sbRIO‑9870 module is available with the part number 780922-01. The serial ports of this module can be accessed easily from the field programmable gate array (FPGA) of the CompactRIO devices, thereby providing ease and flexibility in the communication of the CompactRIO systems.

The sbRIO‑9870 C Series Serial Interface Module features 4 RJ-50 receptacles/ports to provide connection slots for RS232 devices. One of the distinctive features of the NI sbRIO‑9870 module is the provision of a separate 64 B buffer on an individual port, which simplifies programming and saves CompactRIO FPGA space. Other characteristics of the sbRIO‑9870 include supporting the standard start bit, stop bit, and flow control settings. The National Instruments sbRIO‑9870 C Series Serial Interface Module requires an external power supply (V_sup) to power the RS232 transceiver of the module. The NI sbRIO‑9870 supports the RS232 signal in the voltage range ±8 V with the capability of performing with up to 921.6 kbps baud rate. 

The sbRIO‑9870 module has two modes of operation: active mode and sleep mode. In active mode, the NI sbRIO‑9870 consumes 0.5 W power. While in sleep mode, the power consumption is only 50 µW. The sbRIO‑9870 module is able to withstand voltages in the ranges of ±25 V receive signal-to-COM, ±13.2 V transmit signal-to-COM, and ±28 V between V_sup and COM. Additionally, the sbRIO‑9870 C Series Serial Interface Module can withstand isolation overvoltage of 1000 V_rms between port and earth ground.
