National Instruments SMD-7621 Stepper and Servo Motor Motion Drive Device

Designed to work with a universal 230 VAC power supply, the NI SMD-7621 (Part Number: 783014-01) is a Stepper Motion Drive Device from National Instruments. This device works on the foundation of the Step/Direction ENET control interface. The NI SMD-7621 is an ideal solution for bigger motors with an inductance rating within 20 mH to 60 mH. The stepper drive can easily be configured and operated through a regular PC over an Ethernet connection if the two devices are part of a common local area network. For IP address setting, a 16-position rotary switch is provided for ease of the user. Each switch position has a factory default IP address assigned.

Connecting your SMD-7621 device with an existing Ethernet network does not involve additional hardware or software resources other than a standard Ethernet cable. If you want your network to assign your device with an available IP address automatically, then keep the rotary switch at position “F.” The F position commands the device to acquire an IP address automatically from the DHCP server.

The National Instruments SMD-7621 Motion Drive Device can also be connected to a desktop or laptop PC directly through an Ethernet cable. This device comes equipped with a fast-acting, 3.5 A fuse. You can use a variety of third-party motors with this Motion Drive Device. However, National Instruments recommends using the proprietary NEMA 34 stepper motors specifically designed for the SMD-7621. The drive status LED keeps the user informed about the current status of the drive and any persisting faults.

SMD-7621 Mature Status has been announced by National Instruments, but the Motion Drive Device will still be available for purchase and repairs by Apex Waves.
