National Instruments PXI-8183 PXI Embedded Controller

Featured with an 850 MHz Intel Celeron CPU, 128 KB On-die cache, 256 MB RAM, and 40 GB Hard drive, the National Instruments PXI-8183 (Part Numbers: 780343-00, 780343-01, and 780343-33) is a 2-slot Embedded Controller for CompactPCI and PXI systems. This low-cost Controller offers an ideal and practical platform for deploying PXI systems in challenging, high-volume applications. The user can combine their PXI-8183 with a compatible PXI chassis, such as the National Instruments NI PXI 1036 to come up with a portable and compact, Windows-based PC platform for data acquisition, industrial control, and measurement applications.

This Embedded Controller is a robust integration of all standard and extended PC peripherals and a Celeron processor. The National Instruments NI PXI-8183 comes with a collection of necessary software, including the following: Microsoft Windows XP Professional (OS), Hard-drive-based recovery image, NI-VISA, and NI-488.2 drivers, along with drivers for all the integrated I/O ports. The device software can be programmed using application development environments (ADEs) such as LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI, or Measurement Studio.

National Instruments offers a comprehensive range of plug-in modules, so the user can add more peripheral I/O when required. Not only that, but the user can also acquire modules for controlling other VXI/VME or PXI systems. By design, the NI PXI 8183 is a 2-wide 3U PXI Express module, which requires 1 system, plus 1 controller expansion slot (to the left of the system slot) for its deployment. When used in an NI PXI 1043 chassis, this Embedded Controller can be operated within an ambient temperature range of 5 to 50 °C and 10 to 90% relative humidity.

The NI device weighs 1.8 lb, and measures 1.6 x 5.1 x 8.5 in. in physical dimensions. It has a recommended storage temperature range of –40 to 65 °C, a non-condensing storage humidity range of 5% to 95%, and an operating and non-operating random vibration of 0.3 grms and 2.4 grms respectively – all at a frequency range of 5 to 500 Hz.

PXI 8183 Obsolete Status has been announced by National Instruments, but the Controller will still be available for purchase and repairs by Apex Waves.
