The National Instruments PCIe-8430/16 (Part Number: 780591-02) is a 16-Port, PCI Express based, RS232 Serial Interface Device. This model offers high-speed communication with various RS232 devices. The NI PCIe-8430/16 comes with multiprocessor support, DMA transfers, and multithreading. For compatibility with software that incorporates serial communications, this device can also appear as a standard COM port. Unlike other devices that are used for interfacing, the user can utilize this Serial Interface Device to communicate with dozens of ports at an unmatched speed, while staying on a single system and with negligible load on the host machine’s CPU.

The NI PCIe-8430/16 offers up to 1000 kbps data transfer rate and between 2 to 1,000,000 baud rates for data transmission, with around 0.01% and 1% accuracy for standard and nonstandard baud rates respectively. This model comes with NI-VISA API that simplifies serial programming and keeps the user’s code valid on various VISA-compatible interfaces. For RS-232 connectivity, the PCIe-8430/16 comes equipped with one 68-pin VHDCI I/O connector. Two cables are necessary for connectivity between 68-pin VHDCI ports and eight DSUB 9-pin male ports.

While operating in typical conditions, this Serial Interface Device draws 200 mA at +3.3 VDC and 190 mA at +12 VDC from the PCI Express channel.
