National Instruments PXI-8422/2 RS-232 Interface

The National Instruments PXI-8422/2 (Part Number: 777736-02) is a Legacy, 2-Port RS-232 Interface designed for LabVIEW Real-Time and Microsoft Windows Me/9x/NT. This model offers 2000 V, port-to-port optical isolation, a standard baud rate of up to 115.2 kb/s, 64 Byte transmit and receive FIFOs. The National Instruments PXI-8422 is available in 2-port and 4-port configurations. Its 2-port model comes equipped with DE9M (DB9) connectors, whereas position jacks are provided as I/O connectors in the 4-port model. The DB-9 male connectors used in this interface offer a standard pin arrangement for RS232 and RS485 connections.

The NI PXI-8422/2 is offered with driver software for Microsoft Windows 2000, NT, and XP. Users will be able to install and use this serial device`s server as a standard serial port from applications written with NI-VISA or with their existing applications. Like any other serial device, the NI PXI-8422/2 uses TCP/IP communication protocol, which resides on embedded firmware in the serial device server and handles entire communications between the host PC and the serial device server.

This interface does not only communicate with devices that operate with standard baud rates, but it can also interact with devices that run with non-standard baud rates. This device enables the user to take advantage of the latest PC technology as it features hyperthreading and multiprocessor capabilities. The NI PXI-8422/2 interface has a new, memory mapping feature that users can utilize to connect with more serial devices without encountering any resource conflict. While operating at +5 VDC, this interface device requires 400 mA typical and a maximum of 650 mA.

The NI device measures 6.3 x 3.9 in. in physical dimensions. It has recommended operating and storage temperature ranges of 0 to 55 °C and –20 to 70 °C respectively, non-condensing operating and storage humidity ranges of 10 to 90% and 5 to 95% respectively. The RS-232 interface device is designed to comply with the following electrical safety standards: IEC 61010-1, EN 61010-1, UL 61010-1, and CSA 61010-1.

PXI-8422/2 Obsolete Status has been announced by National Instruments, but the module will still be available for purchase and repairs by Apex Waves.
